General Information
With more than 2,800 students, the School of Humanities is the second largest faculty at the University of Mannheim. Approximately every forth graduate of the University of Mannheim has done all or most of his or her studies there. The Faculty integrates all of the humanities at the University of Mannheim in one faculty. It is divided into the following departments:
- English/American Studies
- History
- Media and Communication Studies
- Philosophy
- Romance Studies (French, Spanish, Italian)
- Germanic Studies
- Slavic Studies
Originally only consisting of the subject-areas History, Philosophy, and Educational Science, today’s School of Humanities was founded in 2000 by merging its original departments with the Faculty of Literature and Language Studies. 20 Professors currently (12/2008) teach at the School of Humanities. Four professors teach in each of the subjects English/American Studies, Germanic Studies, History, and Romance Studies. In contrast, the subjects Media- and Communication Studies and Philosophy currently each encompass two professorships, yet will be reinforced by another professor each. Furthermore, in 2009, the subjects English and Media- and Communication Studies will each set up a new junior professorship. In the Slavic Studies, professors in Heidelberg carry out part of their teaching load at the University of Mannheim. In the course of the structure and development plan of the University of Mannheim, the committees of the University unanimously decided to merge the School of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences to one single faculty, which will be divided up into one school for humanities and one for social sciences. This new faculty will be home to about one third of all professors at the University of Mannheim, and with about four thousand students, about 40% of all students of the university. The scheduled date for the fusion of the two faculties is the fall semester 2010, when the Faculty for Business Informatics will also be founded.
