Lithuania: Vytautas Magnus, Mykolas Romeris, Klaipėda University

Partner universities of January 2018

This month’s selection features three universities in Lithuania. Even though they might not attract the most attention, they provide an excellent environment for their students to thrive in. They are

  • the Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) in the student city of Kaunas,
  • the Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius, and
  • the Klaipėda University (KU) in the port city of Klaipėda.

The three universities at a glance

  • Vytautas Magnus University (VMU)

Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) is a public university in Kaunas, Lithuania. It has been part of the Erasmus+ exchange program since 1999. VMU offers 45 bachelor’s programs and more than 50 master’s programs at 10 different schools, which are modeled on modern higher education institutions such as Harvard University.

Currently, more than 7,500 students are enrolled at VMU, 500 of which are international students. Incoming exchange students can choose from all available courses. The language of instruction is English, it is possible to prove your language proficiency with the Language Certificate. International students can also take part in Lithuanian language courses, which are offered by VMU before the semester begins and can be very helpful.

The university is located in the heart of Kaunas, Lithuania’s second city, which hosts several universities and higher education institutions. The student city offers a wide range of recreational and cultural activities and has a beautiful old town. It has also been designated to become the European Capital of Culture 2022.

Students of English and American Studies, German Studies, Romance Studies, and Media and Communication Studies can participate in the exchange program.

  • Mykolas Romeris University (MRU)

Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) is a public university in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital. Currently, MRU has about 10,000 students from 59 countries.

International students can choose from 200 courses offered in English. The language of instruction is English and you can prove your language proficiency with the Language Certificate. In addition, there are many ways to spend your leisure time at MRU: Among other things, the university offers gyms, cultural activities, and language courses – all of them free of charge. All incoming exchange students can live in on-campus housing.

Vilnius, the country’s capital and – with half a million inhabitants – the largest city, is often referred to as the greenest city of Europe. Its old town is made up of many historic buildings and was declared an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.

Students of English and American Studies can participate in the exchange program.

  • Klaipėda University (KU)

Klaipėda University (KU) is a public university in the Lithuanian port city Klaipėda. The university, which was founded in 1991, cooperates with 200 European universities and has about 10,000 students.

Erasmus students can choose from a selection of 31 different courses. They can also participate in a free Lithuanian language course before the beginning of the semester and obtain a certificate at the end. Alongside the course, which has been offered by the university for 17 years, VMU also organizes many cultural activities. They range from literature and theater workshops to excursions and visits to Lithuanian families. KU is a member of the International Exchange Erasmus Student Network (ESN).

The city of Klaipėda (162,000 inhabitants) is located at the shores of the Baltic Sea, right in the center of Northeastern Europe. Life in the city was considerably shaped by its eventful history: Since 1629, it has been, at times, under either Swedish, German, French, or Soviet rule. Klaipėda hosts the most important seaport in Lithuania. It also features a picturesque old town with timbered houses and impressive monuments.

Students of English and American Studies can participate in the exchange program.

The application deadline for all three universities is January 31, 2018.

I wanted to travel to a country I had never visited before and also learn a new language during my semester abroad. The university’s appealing web presence and the positive experiences of other students were the reasons I chose VMU. I had a great time there and never regretted my decision. Not only did I make a lot of new friends from all over the world, but also traveled around Lithuania and to other neighboring countries. Kaunas is comparable to Mannheim in size. It is characterized by its small, but gorgeous historic center, where the university is located.

I applied for VMU because other students wrote very positively about the university in their reports [...]. In Lithuania, you pay less than in Germany for almost everything, be it for your rent or for dining out. The contact persons at the partner university kept us busy with all sorts of activities and went out of their way to help us if we encountered any problems. If I had to choose where to spend a period abroad again, I would always opt for VMU. While I was there, I visited many adjacent countries. I even decided to extend my stay by half a year because the town and the university became my second home in no time.
