German Linguistics

Our research and teaching focus on the many ways in which language and society are intertwined. We address key questions in sociolinguistics, media linguistics, and usage-based grammar research. Current projects explore lexicogrammatical patterns in digital self-positioning, the linguistic shaping of social constructs such as the body, gender, and generation, as well as practices of historical writing in institutional settings. We are committed to research-led teaching that not only presents core theories and methods in an engaging way, but also examines linguistic phenomena that reflect current social developments.

The Chair of German Linguistics at the University of Mannheim works in close partnership with the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS). Students benefit from a wide-ranging curriculum, enriched by courses taught jointly with IDS professors and researchers.
