Prof. Dr. Stefan Engelberg

Prof. Dr. Stefan Engelberg is professor for German Linguistics at the University of Mannheim and Head of the Department of “Lexical studies” and the project cluster “Lexical Syntagmatics” at the Leibniz Institute for the German Language, where he is also currently the deputy director. Futhermore, he is honorary professor for lexicography at the University of Tübingen. 

Stefan Engelberg studied General Linguistics, German Philology and Slavic Studies at the Universities of Frankfurt and Münster. He completed his Ph.D. (dissertation topic: “Verben, Ereignisse und das Lexikon”) and his Habilitation (topic: “Lexikalische und strukturelle Aspekte bei der Konstituierung der Satzbedeutung”) at the University of Wuppertal.

His research interests focus on: 

  • Semantics: Lexical Semantics, event semantics, argument structures, metaphors
  • Syntax: Syntax-Semantics Interface, valency, constructions
  • Lexicography: Internet lexicography, loan word lexicography, valency lexicography
  • Morphology:  compounds, productivity 
  • Language contact: Loan words, colonial language contact
  • Empirical Methodology
