Matthias Kohring has been a professor for media and communication studies at the University of Mannheim since September 2010.

He majored in Journalism and communication studies, political science and German language and literature studies at the University of Münster. There, he received a doctorate degree for his work on the functions of science journalism in 1996.

From 1996 to 1998, he worked as a research associate in applied media studies at the TU Ilmenau. From 1998, he worked in the field of media studies at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, first as an assistant lecturer and later as senior scientific assistant. There, he habilitated with his work on trust in journalism in 2004.

In the summer semester of 2005 and the winter semester of 2005/2006, he acted as a substitute professor for communication studies at the University of Münster, where he went on to hold a professorship for communication studies from the winter semester of 2006/2007 to the summer semester of 2010.

The primary focus of his research is on science communication, the public sphere and journalism, and trust in the media.
