Salem, USA: Salem State University

The Salem State University (SSU) is a 164 year old public university in Salem, Massachusetts, 26 kilometer north of Boston. About 9,000 students and 800 teachers study and work at the university. Small courses with about 25 participants create an informal atmosphere. The SSU stands out due to the institution’s close relationship between students and teachers. In addition to its supportive professors, the university also boasts a versatile and varied range of courses.

The history of SSU dates back to the year 1854 when only women were educated at the institution. In the university's on-campus residence halls, international students can quickly establish contact with their American fellow students. A buddy program and numerous social activities such as the international coffee hour as well as a broad range of free sports activities invite to a welcoming connection. With their student ID card, students get free entry to all museums in Salem.

Salem is located on the east coast of the USA in the Massachusetts Bay. Massachusetts is one of of the leading locations for education in the USA. Salem is also very well connected to the nearby cities: For example, Boston, the culture-rich capital of Massachusetts, is only 26 kilometers away and can be reached by ferry or by bus within less than an hour. New Hampshire, Maine, and New York are also popular destinations for a day trip. If you have a couple of free days, you should visit Montreal or enjoy the breathtaking view of the Niagara Falls. 

With only about 41,300 inhabitants, Salem is a very small city. Nevertheless, due to the Salem witch trials in 1692 it has become known all over the world as the city served as a source of inspiration for novels and computer games as well as numerous movies and series. In Salem, maritime flair meets historical architecture: One of the main attractions for history lovers is the House of the Seven Gables, the oldest house of New England. Salem does not only score with its great location by the sea; several rivers and beautiful parks also invite visitors to relax. 

Downtown Salem offers many exciting possibilities to have fun and spend a great night out. There are also many interesting museums in town. And if you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss to visit America’s oldest candy company and buy some iconic chocolates. Another must-do in autumn: During the entire month of October, the former “witch town” boasts the ultimate Halloween experience, featuring numerous parades, costume parties, and haunted houses, and attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world. Come to Salem and be prepared to be scared!

Temperatures in Massachusetts are comparable to German weather. In autumn, enjoy the spectacular Indian Summer in all its colorful beauty.

The language of instruction is English. The IELTS (<5.5), IBT (59–60), and PBT (>500) tests are recognized as valid proofs of language proficiency.

Bachelor’s students of English and American Studies, German Studies, History, Media and Communication Studies, and Philosophy are eligible to participate in the exchange program.
