Forschungsinteressen
Dr. Sina Schuhmaiers Forschung umfasst Ansätze der Postcolonial Studies, Cultural Studies, der materiellen Ökokritik und der Medical Humanities. Ihr Habilitationsprojekt untersucht die Darstellung von Ansteckungskrankheiten im Kontext des British empire. Aktuell betrachtet Sina Schuhmaier literarische und nicht-fiktionale Krankheitsdarstellungen innerhalb des transatlantischen Sklavenhandels und konnte für den Sommer 2025 Förderung zur Archivforschung in verschiedenen Archiven in London einwerben. Ihr Artikel “Subject Formation in the Early Black Atlantic: Disease Narratives of the Middle Passage” (PDF) wurde mit dem BSLS und JLS Essaypreis für das Jahr 2025 ausgezeichnet.
Ihre erste Monographie Changing the Record: Englishness, Popular Music, and the Song Lyric in the 21st Century erscheint bei Routledge. Das Buch untersucht zeitgenössische britische Songtexte in einem Dialog von Literaturwissenschaft und Popular Music Studies. Vor dem Hintergrund des dominantes Diskurses um Nation im Brexit-Zeitalter beleuchtet das Buch die kulturelle Funktionsweise des Songtextes und versteht sich als Beitrag zum wachsenden Feld der Critical Englishness Studies.

Biografische Informationen
Dr. Sina Schuhmaier ist akademische Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Anglistische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft (A II). Nach einem Bachelorstudium der Anglistik an den Universitäten Heidelberg und Nottingham studierte sie von 2015 bis 2017 an der Universität Mannheim im Masterstudienprogramm „Literatur, Medien und Kultur der Moderne“. Ihre Dissertation zum Thema „Dominant and Dissonant Discourses of the Nation: Pop Music, the Song Lyric, and Englishness in the 21st Century“ reichte sie im September 2023 ein. Im Rahmen der Dissertation verbrachte sie im Frühjahr 2022 einen dreimonatigen Forschungsaufenthalt an der University of Bristol. Seit 2023 betreut sie die „Reading List 2.0“ mit.
Lehre
Dr. Sina Schuhmaiers Lehre umfasst anglophone Literatur verschiedener Epochen, mit einem Schwerpunkt auf britischer Gegenwartsliteratur und postkolonialer Literatur. Das Lehrangebot deckt insbesondere die Gattungen Roman, Kurzgeschichte und Lyrik ab, behandelt aber auch immer wieder multimediale Formen wie den Songtext und die Fernsehserie. Literatur wird hier als Medium kultureller Selbstreflektion vermittelt, welches beispielsweise Diskurse um den Körper, Nation, das British Empire und Identität verhandelt.
