Forschungsinteressen
Katharina Motyl ist Akademische Rätin auf Zeit am Lehrstuhl für Amerikanische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft. Katharina Motyl ist Fachstudienberaterin für das Beifach Englisch im Studiengang Wirtschaftspädagogik (B.Sc. / M.Sc.). Sie ist die Autorin der Monografie With the Face of the Enemy – Arab American Literature since 9/
11 (Campus / Chicago UP), und verfasst momentan ihre Habilitationsschrift, in der sie die Interaktionen rechtlicher, medizinischer und kultureller Diskurse über Drogenkonsum und Sucht unter sozialen Minderheiten von der frühen Republik bis zum ‘War on Drugs’ analysiert. Neben den Forschungsinteressen, die sie in diesen beiden Buchprojekten verfolgt (die Kultur der Araber_innen und Muslim_innen in den USA; der 'War on Terror'; Gender Studies; indigene Kulturen in den USA; afroamerikanische Kultur; amerikanischer Realismus; Lyrik; visuelle Kultur; Law and Literature; Medical Humanities; Posthumanismus; postkoloniale Studien / dekoloniale Kritik), beschäftigt sich ihre Forschung mit afroamerikanischen literarischen Verhandlungen der Idee von ‘Black freedom’, mit der Kulturgeschichte des Scheiterns in den USA, wobei Scheitern sowohl als Resultat durchmachteter Strukturen wie auch als Strategie des Widerstands konzipiert wird, sowie mit der Frage, wie Wissensproduktion in den USA und Deutschland sich in Richtung größerer Diversität entwickeln und wie critical diversity literacy in der universitären Bildung gefördert werden kann. Sie wurde 2013 in Amerikanistik am John-F.-Kennedy Institut der Freien Universität Berlin promoviert, nachdem sie 2009 das Magisterstudium der Amerikanistik, Politikwissenschaft, und Journalistik an der Universtität Hamburg abgeschlossen hatte. Als visiting scholar hat sie an der University of California at Berkeley, der University of Southern California, und der New York University geforscht.

Ihr Lehrangebot an der Universität Mannheim umfasst beispielsweise die Kurse „Drugs and Substance Dependence in the U.S.,“ „(Neo-)Slave Narratives,“ „Arab and Muslim American Literature“ und „Film Studies.“
